Franklin Cohen

Principal clarinet of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1976, Franklin Cohen has distinguished himself as one of the outstanding clarinetists of his generation. He first gained widespread acclaim in 1968 when, at the age of 22, he became the first - and, to date, only - clarinetist awarded First Prize at the International Munich Competition.
A native New Yorker, Franklin Cohen was born in 1946 and began clarinet study at the age of 10. He entered the Juilliard School of Music upon graduation from high school and has held the position of principal clarinetist with the American Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and Casals Festival Orchestras.Since his first solo appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra in August 1978, Mr. Cohen has been heard as soloist in more than 80 performances, at Severance Hall, Blossom Music Center, and on tour in the United States and abroad.
Mr. Cohen has performed and made recordings with pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy. He has been a guest artist at the Marlboro, Aspen and Santa Fe Festivals and has performed with the Emerson and Guarneri Quartets. Mr. Cohen has given masterclasses and seminars at many universities and conservatories throughout the world and, since 1976, has chaired the clarinet department at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
