Steven Barta


Steven Barta has been Principal Clarinet with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 1976. Prior to joining the BSO, he was principal clarinet with the Savannah Symphony and has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and in the University Circle Orchestra under James Levine.
Equally versatile in chamber music, he has performed with the Festival Chamber Players, Music from Gretna, Music by Candlelight Series and at the Peabody Institute. Barta has also been a member of the Baltimore Wind Quintet, composed of Principals from the Baltimore Symphony.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Robert Marcellus. He also studied with Harold Wright at the Marlboro Music Festival, with additional studies at Boston University, Tanglewood, and the Blossom Festival School.
On the faculty of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University since 1984, he has also taught at the Catholic University in Washington D.C. He has given Master classes at Yale University, Northwestern University, Colorado College, the University of Delaware and in Hong Kong and Seoul Korea, where he performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Seoul Philharmonic. In 1998 he was appointed to the faculty of the Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong. He was also guest soloist in the Frank Martin Concerto for the 25th anniversary of the Blossom Festival School.
Mr. Barta has made numerous solo appearances with the BSO, ranging from Mozart to Musgrave, and has made numerous recordings with the BSO for the Telarc, Sony, Erato, and Vanguard labels. He recently recorded the Loeffler Rhapsodies for Koch International.
