Peter Weniger, born 1964 in Hamburg, Germany, is one of the most spectacular saxophone soloists on the international jazz scene.
His studies started at the Conservatory of Hamburg where he received a diploma in the model trial "popular music" in 1984. In 1992, he completed his jazz studies at the Cologne Music Conservatory with “summa cum laude”.
He received numerous awards for his musical performance: In 1988 he won the Tonger music competition for saxophone in Cologne, in 1989 he received the award for the best soloist of the jazz festival Karlovy-Vary in what was then Czechoslovakia. In 1996, he was awarded the jazz prize of the South West German Broadcasting Corporation SWF and his CD "Tip Tap" received the quarterly award of the German record critics. In 1998, he won the Jazz Pott for the best modern artist.
Peter Weniger has so far published nine CDs of his own, a. o. with Hubert Nuß, Conrad Herwig, John Abercrombie, Rufus Reid, Adam Nussbaum, David Liebman, Carl Allen, Dennis Erwin, John Schröder, Jeff Hamilton, Christian Ramond, Lynn Seaton, Rob Pronk and the Metropol Orchestra. He has also recorded and toured with a great variety of musicians, a. o. with Maceo Parker, Jasper van’t Hof’s "Pili Pili", Billy Cobham, Bill Mays, Matt Wilson, Martin Wind, Eddie Palmieri, Lionel Richie, Django Bates, Mike Stern, Leni Stern, David Friedman’s TAMBOUR, Peter Herbolzheimers RC & B, the Paul Kuhn Orchestra as well as the Big Bands of the German Broadcasting Corporations SWR, HR, NDR and WDR.
Since the winter semester 1999/2000, he has been professor at the University Of Arts, “Universität der Künste”, in Berlin. In Spring 2005 he was elected artistic director of the recently founded “Jazz Institute Berlin”.
