Carlos Miyares

Cuban saxophonist, composer, producer and arranger, born in Santiago de Cuba, land characterized by its rich musical tradition.

He started his musical studies with piano, which later abandoned during his third year to start playing saxophone. Mr. Miyares began his professional career in 1997, with the group Muralla, in his hometown Santiago de Cuba.

He joined Chucho Valdés & The Afro-Cuban Messengers in 2008, and participated in the recording of Chucho’s Steps, which won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. In 2010 he recorded his first solo album call Chucho Valdés Presents Carlos Miyares, in which he is the composer, arranger and musical producer, alongside Chucho Valdés. Short after he founded Carlos Miyares & The Cuban Quintet, performing in Cuba and abroad.

Carlos has gained recognition for his contributions to afro Cuban jazz and Latin jazz, and has collaborated in more than 50 cd’s and DVD’s, as well as film music.

Mr. Miyares has performed with Chucho Valdés in numerous prestigious stages around the wolrd, including Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), North Sea Jazz (Netherlands), Jazz at Lincoln Center (United States), Jazz in Marciac (France), Jazz à Vienne (France), Stockholm Jazz Festival (Sweden), Barcelona Jazz Festival (Spain), Enjoy Jazz (Germany), Jazz des Cinq Continents (France), Jazz à Juan (France), Jazz à la Villette (France), Berklee College of Music (United States), Puebla International Festival (Mexico),Plaza Jazz Festival (Cuba), and many more.

He has also colaborated with artists such as Archie Shepp, Wynton Marsalis & The Jazz at Lincoln Center, Harold López Nussa, Roberto Carcasses, Roberto Fonseca, Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernández, Omara Portuondo, Carlos Valera, Zuccero, Francisco Céspedes, Antonio Sánchez, among others.

His latest release is his album call “Toma Uno”, with EGREM Records.
